Regardless of their style and quality, bathtubs and showers see a lot of use and show wear and tear over time. When your tub or shower has seen better days, a decision has to be made – do you replace it with something new, or do you give it a facelift and keep it? While replacement is definitely warranted at times, there are many other times when repairing and refinishing bathtubs makes the most sense.
When and how to upgrade your bathtub
If the structure of your bathtub is still sound, and the style continues to fit with your tastes and the bathroom itself, a few repairs or a cosmetic adjustment may be in order to give it a fresh look. Let’s look at your options.
Also known as bathtub reglazing or resurfacing, this is a great way to revitalize your tub without the expense of having to replace it. Sometimes, hard water stains, cracks, and grime buildup can make your tub look unsightly and detract from the relaxing environment it’s supposed to provide. In addition, cracks that are left alone for too long can eventually lead to leaks, which can cause a mess and additional expense.
The bathtub reglazing process involves several steps, but can usually be completed in approximately three hours, followed by a 48-hour window during which the new finish dries and cures. The process begins with a thorough cleaning and sanding of the existing fixture. Hardware items, like faucets, are often removed, and nearby furniture or fixtures can be covered to keep them clean and untouched. After sanding, the tub is cleaned again and caulking is repaired or re-installed. Finally, several coats of the new finish are applied, leaving the tub or shower looking like new and ready to use within a very short time! This is far less expensive and time-consuming than an entire bathroom renovation.
Bathtub Repairs and Shower Repairs
Tub and shower surfaces often get tiny cracks. Over time, these can expand to larger ones that then leak, causing more extensive issues like ruined flooring or walls. To prevent this, cracks should be repaired as soon as possible. A professional technician can fix most cracks within a day, and seal the repair so that it is protected for the future.
Sometimes, the cause of the cracks also needs to be fixed. When tub floors are not supported properly, there is movement (“bouncing”) of the floor, causing it to crack over time and use. Again, a professional technician can fix this relatively quickly by using a specialized foam application procedure. Small holes are drilled in the tub’s floor, and a unique, hardening foam is injected to provide additional support. The holes are then filled and covered with glaze, leaving the surface looking like it was never touched, but resulting in no more bouncing floors!
